There are so many reasons that this place is going to be cool but the main one, in my opinion, is Laura Sohn. She's the force behind Mockingbird Events and is one swell gal.

Thumbs up, people!

I've got a few things that I'm throwing out there. All these things help my friends and I'm lucky enough to have a lot of friends. They are good to me and do good work. I want you to know about this stuff and if you feel so inclined, I think you should consider giving your support.

Market Square Farmers' Market
American Farmland Trust is hosting a contest for the top 20 markets in the country. Now most of you know that I wo...rk for the organization that is a part of our market, but I also really believe in what Charlotte does with the Market Square Farmers' Market and the positive impact it has on our community. By the way, the Chattanooga Market is kicking our butts in this competition and their market is nothing compared to ours.
You can copy and paste this link to rock the vote.

There are also links to twitter and facebook to spread the word.

Chickens
Here's the Permaculture website where you can find out more about the final vote on urban hens. It's August 24. That's Tuesday. If all passes, as it should, we'll be having hens up in here. Ya'll can all visit. I'll make omelets.

South by Southwest
Please consider voting in the South by Southwest film panel picker. My friend, Scott, has a panel up for consideration. You can give it a thumbs up. It's very easy. This public voting counts for about 30% of the decision on whether to include this panel discussion.
You can copy and paste this link to make it happen.

2nd Annual Smokin' Day Festival
I'm helping the most awesome Chris Ford of Sweet P's BBQ with his 2nd Annual Smokin' Day Festival this year. The food there is incredible! There's going to be cornhole and a banana pudding eating contest. $20 in advance gets all your food plus entertainment. Beer is extra and will cost about $2 per icy cold beverage. Now I love some good BBQ but what I really love is a good band. My dear friend Kevin Buchmeier along with my other dear friend Peggy Hambright will be playing a couple of sets during the evening. The 3 Uncles (including my great friend Jeff Barbra) will be under the big tent outside playing fantastic country tunes. The Naughty Knots (my sweet friends all ~ Sarah Pirkle, Griffin Cavendar, Trisha Gene Brady and Millie Cavender) will do some lovely harmonies with Americana/folk/bluegrass/down home music. The evening ends with soul and funk from Aftah Party. This is the second time I've hired them for a gig and you will love them. www.sweetpbbq.com for more information and advance tickets. It's going to cost you an extra $5 if you get your ticket at the door.

Glowing Body
The Glowing Body has yoga, food and music. There's a special on right now for the Glow To Go Box. Let the person at the desk you heard it from me and you'll get 10% off your order. It's a weeks worth of mostly organic healthy vegetarian food cooked by my terrific friends Hollis and Mollie. I have spent a lot of time with these ladies cooking for the likes of Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews. This is no lie. They rock out the food. You can also get a mighty fine stretch in one of these yoga classes. Miss Tess and the Bon Ton Parade will be playing in the big studio on Friday September 24. You might want to put it on your calendar because it's going to be a sweet night. It's good there. It's good all the way around. www.glowingbody.net for more information

WDVX Volunteer Opportunities
You can just search this event and Jennie has listed some upcoming ways you can give a little bit of your time to make a big difference. WDVX has always helped me when I've been organizing such things as theatrical productions and biscuit festivals. I serve on their advisory committee and I believe in what they do as something to make Knoxville proud.

I know everyone has enough to do but think about it. I don't need a commitment or a ring or anything.

How are those taste buds feeling? Are they in the need for some sweet soul barbeque? Do you feel the urge to sit by the lake and listen to some fine tunes while indulging your summer-warmed belly? I think the answer is “Bring it!”

Head on down to the 2nd Annual Smokin’ Day Festival at Sweet P’s Barbeque and Soul House!

Sweet P’s will be roasting pig and dishing out potato salad and banana pudding to satisfy. Americana, Country and Soul music will be performed live throughout the evening. Pabst Blue Ribbon will be icy cold and a cornhole tournament will be at hand. A mere $20 gets you in the door to the land of all you can eat and fine music but if you wait until the last minute, it’ll cost you another $5. Visit www.sweetpbbq.com or stop by Sweet P’s to purchase tickets.

Live and in person:

Kevin Buchmeier – indoors and between sets, 5:30-6pm and 7:30-8pm

An emerging singer/songwriter, Kevin entertains his audience with his endearingly clever lyrics and heartfelt voice. His catchy guitar picking will keep you tapping your toes. Kevin is the recent winner of the International Biscuit Festival Songwriting Competition. He won with a new ditty called “Risk it for her Biscuit”.

3 Uncles ~ 4:15-5:30pm, under the Big Tent

These Uncles are the Blount County members of The Drunk Uncles, playing real country music in Honky Tonks all around. In the condensed version of this drunken mish mash of Country hits and soon to be hits, Uncle Jeff, Uncle Eric and Uncle Gordy sing and play their hearts out. It’s enough to put a tear in your beer.

The Naughty Knots ~ 6-7:30pm, under the Big Tent

Organically formed from the red clay dirt of Eastern Tennessee! “From the living room to the stage, the Naughty Knots, comprised of Sarah Pirkle, Trisha Gene Brady, Griffin Cavender and Millie Cavender are a sassy group of native east Tennessee girls hell bent on singin’ your socks off! Playing both traditional and contemporary acoustic music, these ladies are turn heads in the Knoxville scene with their instruments and sweet mountain harmonies. And they can cook too!

Aftah Party ~ 8-10pm, under the Big Tent

Founded by Kenneth Brown, Keith Brown, and Melvin Ellis (Ellis Brown), Aftah Party is made up of some of the best musicians in the Southeast. Aftah Party transitions from Neo-Soul to Funk to Rock to Spoken Word and everything else in between. The only goal of Aftah Party is to leave people feeling good and to rip it every time they hit the stage!
